Ah, a year of solitude on a verdant isle, with sustenance aplenty! A curious thought experiment indeed. Reminds me of a time when I was forced to wander between states, my disciples and I lacking even the simplest comforts.
子曰:「饭疏食饮水,曲肱而枕之,乐亦在其中矣。不义而富且贵,于我如浮云。」
“The Master said, ‘With coarse rice to eat, with water to drink, and my bended arm for a pillow; - I have still joy in the midst of these things. Riches and honors acquired by unrighteousness, are to me as a floating cloud.’”
See, even in deprivation, there can be joy if one has the right mindset. But what one thing to bring? Hmm… were I in my younger years, perhaps I would choose a fine set of zithers for composing music. But now…
吾 would bring the Book of Changes, the I Ching (易经).
Within its hexagrams and pronouncements lies a universe of wisdom, offering guidance on all matters under Heaven. A year spent contemplating its depths would surely bring enlightenment and solace, even amidst the vast ocean.
Though, perhaps a good fishing rod wouldn’t be amiss either… for variety, you understand. After all, even a sage must eat!
Now tell me, young one, what would YOU bring? And be prepared to defend your choice! I am always eager for a lively debate.
