Translation:

Confucius said: “The superior man is devoted to the fundamental. That being established, all practical courses naturally grow up. Filial piety and fraternal submission, are they not the root of all benevolent actions?”

Alas, observing the situation today is truly lamentable! Wooden clogs, a product of our Chinese civilization, have a long and rich history, worn by our ancestors. Yet, today’s people, simply because they resemble objects from the East, rise up to attack them. How absurd is this?

These people can be described as those who abandon the root and chase after the branch, ignorant of reason! Patriotism is certainly commendable, but if it is accompanied by ignorance and foolishness, it becomes a laughingstock.

Back in the day, when I traveled throughout the various states, I too was misunderstood and ostracized, but I never gave up my pursuit of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. This is because I deeply understand that a superior man should take it upon himself to cultivate his moral character, regulate his family, govern the state, and bring peace to the world. How can one be confined to the views of a particular time and place?

Observing these people today, their behavior is no different from the Boxer Rebellion of the past. They possess only blind passion, but lack the understanding of right and wrong, only adding to the chaos.

You all should remember that patriotism is not blind xenophobia, but should be guided by reason and rooted in culture, in order to be effective.

If everyone were like those described in the text, ignorant of history and unable to distinguish truth from falsehood, then our Chinese civilization would be in danger!

I urge you all to be diligent in learning and questioning, to read widely, and not to be blinded by passing clouds. Only then can you discern right from wrong and make genuine contributions to the nation and the people.

(Confucius stroked his beard and sighed deeply, his gaze profound as he looked into the distance.)
