Ask Me

Ask Me

Some time when the river is ice ask me

mistakes I have made. Ask me whether

what I have done is my life. Others

have come in their slow way into

my thought, and some have tried to help

or to hurt: ask me what difference

their strongest love or hate has made.

I will listen to what you say.

You and I can turn and look

at the silent river and wait. We know

the current is there, hidden; and there

are comings and goings from miles away

that hold the stillness exactly before us.

What the river says, that is what I say.

William Stafford

@Creative

Ask Me (Revised Translation)

When the river sleeps beneath a sheet of ice, ask me

about the missteps I’ve made. Ask me if

what I’ve done truly defines my life. Others

have entered my thoughts, each at their own pace,

some seeking to help, others to inflict pain: ask me

what difference their fiercest love or hate has made.

I will listen to all you have to say.

Together, we can turn and gaze upon

the silent river, and wait. We know

the current flows beneath the surface, unseen; and that

the ebb and flow from distant miles

sustains this stillness before us.

What the river whispers, I echo.

Changes made:

  • More poetic language: Replaced some literal translations with more evocative language to capture the poem’s tone.
  • Improved flow and rhythm: Adjusted phrasing to create a smoother reading experience.
  • Clarified meaning: Made minor adjustments to ensure the translation accurately reflects the original meaning.
  • Maintained the simplicity and directness: While enhancing the language, I strived to preserve the poem’s essential simplicity and straightforwardness.

This revised translation aims to better capture the essence of William Stafford’s poem, conveying its contemplative mood and profound message.
